Farming grows more challenging every day. Costs rise, the climate is changing, and one of humanity’s oldest and most important responsibilities, producing food, faces new challenges that require new solutions.

That’s certainly true here in Punjab, northern India, where I grow potatoes, rice, maize, moong, and seasonal vegetables on our family farm. Like millions of farmers around the world, we face constant pressure from unpredictable weather, rising input costs, and limited natural resources. amid shifting circumstances. Every season presents the same critical question: How can we produce more food with fewer resources while preserving the land for future generations?

That’s why I’ve embraced artificial intelligence. It makes me a better farmer.

Many farmers in my area are cautious rather than resistant to AI. Their concerns are understandable. They wonder whether the technology will actually work under local farming conditions or whether it will be too complicated to use. Some even worry that AI will replace farmers.

Rather than fearing AI, I’ve chosen to embrace it as another tool that helps me farm more efficiently and sustainably. My experience has convinced me that artificial intelligence can never replace farmer intelligence—or the human heart at the center of agriculture.

AI analyzes large amounts of data, identifies patterns and provides timely recommendations. It can even learn from new information.

But AI is still just a tool. Like every important innovation before it, its role is to improve human capability – not replace it. We should regard AI as the latest in a long line of technologies that have helped agriculture become more productive, efficient and sustainable.

Throughout history, farmers have always adopted better tools. Tractors replaced the hard work of draft animals. Crop-protection products reduced the backbreaking task of hand weeding. Improved seed genetics have replaced much of the uncertainty of traditional crop selection.

What was once considered revolutionary has become routine. Today, we rarely think twice about using these technologies because they have earned our trust. Looking back, it is difficult to imagine farming without them.

When farmers adopt new tools like AI, we are not abandoning tradition – we are continuing it. We build upon the knowledge, experience and wisdom of those who came before us while embracing innovations that help us meet today’s challenges. That is how agriculture has always evolved.

AI is no different. For many people it still feels unfamiliar. Like every major innovation before it, it takes time to build confidence and trust.

I see AI as a decision-support tool, not a decision-maker. It helps me gather and assess information, analyze options, and make better informed decisions. But every important decision still depends on my experience, judgment and understanding of my farm. Artificial intelligence compliments farmer intelligence – it never replaces it.

On our farm, AI combines weather forecasts with data from soil-moisture sensors to help us decide when and how much to irrigate our crops. Instead of following a fixed schedule, we use real-time information to apply water more precisely. This improves water-use efficiency, conserves groundwater, reduces electricity consumption, supports healthier crops and helps us produce more food with fewer resources.

Small improvements can make a big difference. Better decisions improve productivity, lower production costs, conserve natural resources, and strengthen the sustainability of our farming system.

Innovation is rarely a straight path. Some farmers remain skeptical because they have experienced digital technologies that were complicated, required extensive data entry, or depended on constant internet access. Technology should simplify farming – not make it more difficult. The best innovations save farmers’ time, reduce risk, and support better decisions.

I’m still learning how to use AI, but I already know that it’s helping me farm smarter, not harder. That is what my own experience tells me.

Looking ahead, I believe AI will become even more valuable by providing earlier warnings of pest and disease outbreaks, more accurate field-specific yield predictions, improved irrigation and nutrient management, soil-health monitoring, carbon-footprint assessment, and better farm record management. These practical applications can help farmers become more productive while building greater resilience to climate change.

AI holds tremendous potential to improve agriculture everywhere. My vision is for AI to empower farmers with better information, so that we can produce more food with fewer resources, strengthen climate resilience, protect our soil and water, and leave healthier farms for future generations.

AI is a powerful tool that helps me improve the productivity, sustainability, and resilience of my farm. It supports my decisions, but it doesn’t make them.
