Gabriel Carballal

Gabriel Carballal is an agronomist and farmer from southwest Uruguay, where he farms about 2,000 leased hectares of crops and livestock in one of the country’s most productive agricultural regions. Calling himself a “farmer with no farm,” Gabriel manages administrative and operational responsibilities across the business, working with a knowledgeable team throughout the production and administrative process and believes strongly in delegating responsibilities while remaining closely involved in the work.

His operation produces winter crops including wheat, barley, canola, carinata, camelina, oats, ryegrass, and forage crops, as well as summer crops including soybeans, corn, sunflower, sorghum, and Sudan grass. The livestock enterprise includes a closed production system. Gabriel began his career after studying as an agricultural technician, first working in the family operation and later leasing land as an independent producer beginning in 2006.

He volunteers as Secretary and as a board member for the Global Farmer Network, is a Bayer Forward Farming member in Uruguay, has participated in Farmers Who SUSTAIN, and is active with the Dolores Agricultural Association and Farm Tour Uruguay U.S.A. Gabriel was recognized with the GFN’s 2021 Kleckner Award from the Global Farmer Network and as a Protagonist of Agriculture in Uruguay in 2026.
